چکیده

Experimental evidence is presented to show that the O enrichment in the leaf biomass and the mean (timeaveraged) transpiration rate are positively correlated in groundnut and rice genotypes. The relationship between oxygen isotope enrichment and stomatal conductance (gs) was determined by altering gs through ABA and subsequently using contrasting genotypes of cowpea and groundnut. The Peclet model for the O enrichment of leaf water relative to the source water is able to predict the mean observed values well, while it cannot reproduce the full range of measured isotopic values. Further, it fails to explain the observed positive correlation between transpiration rate and O enrichment in leaf biomass. Transpiration rate is influenced by the prevailing environmental conditions besides the intrinsic genetic variability. As all the genotypes of both species experienced similar environmental conditions, the differences in transpiration rate could mostly be dependent on intrinsic gs. Therefore, it appears that the DO of leaf biomass can be used as an effective surrogate for mean transpiration rate. Further, at a given vapour pressure difference, DO can serve as a measure of stomatal conductance as well.

Update on Transpiration and Isotopes Heavy Water Fractionation during Transpiration

A small proportion of water molecules contain the heavier isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen. There is a tendency for these heavier molecules of water to accumulate in leaves during transpiration. This has several interesting repercussions, including effects on the isotopic composition of organic matter, and of atmospheric water vapor, carbon dioxide, and oxygen. In turn, these effects aid tempora...

A controlled test of the dual-isotope approach for the interpretation of stable carbon and oxygen isotope ratio variation in tree rings.

Seedlings of a conifer (Pinus radiata D. Don) and a broad leaf angiosperm (Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) were grown for 100 days in two growth cabinets at 45 or 65% relative humidity. The seedlings were exposed to treatments designed to modify carbon assimilation rates and capacities, stomatal conductance and transpiration to test conceptual models that attempt to clarify the interpretation of c...

Environmental effects on oxygen isotope enrichment of leaf water in cotton leaves.

The oxygen isotope enrichment of bulk leaf water (Delta(b)) was measured in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) leaves to test the Craig-Gordon and Farquhar-Gan models under different environmental conditions. Delta(b) increased with increasing leaf-to-air vapor pressure difference (VPd) as an overall result of the responses to the ratio of ambient to intercellular vapor pressures (e(a)/e(i)) and to st...

Are leaf physiological traits related to leaf water isotopic enrichment in restinga woody species?

During plant-transpiration, water molecules having the lighter stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen evaporate and diffuse at a faster rate through the stomata than molecules having the heavier isotopes, which cause isotopic enrichment of leaf water. Although previous models have assumed that leaf water is well-mixed and isotopically uniform, non-uniform stomatal closure, promoting different e...

Isotopic composition of transpiration and rates of change in leaf water isotopologue storage in response to environmental variables.

During daylight hours, the isotope composition of leaf water generally approximates steady-state leaf water isotope enrichment model predictions. However, until very recently there was little direct confirmation that isotopic steady-state (ISS) transpiration in fact exists. Using isotope ratio infrared spectroscopy (IRIS) and leaf gas exchange systems we evaluated the isotope composition of tra...
